Reading Partners
Every night, for the three years we were together
She'd sit right there
On that couch
And read
And on this couch
I'd read too
The most pleasant silence would soften the room
And the only sweeping sounds that bloomed would be
Her fingers gliding on the page when she'd turn her page
And when I'd turn mine
Every once in a while
We turned our pages at the same time
And when that used to happen
She'd look at me; I, her
And we'd smile
She was only my roommate
But when she left
She left me some of her books
And every once in a while
When I'm sitting alone; reading
I catch myself smiling at the thought,
"That she could be turning too"
